The Tide - Tablo
Thankfully Spring break will be here after tomorrow, but my mind and body are incredibly exhausted. I've never had such a rough semester before, even at the craziest, it hasn't been as stressful as it is now. Going to South Korea was less stressful than this! However, I have one report to finish tonight and then I have one class tomorrow morning, then I have completed the first half of this semester! I know no one's going to give me a pat on the back for getting through this, so I'll do it myself. Pat pat. My pet fish, Kimchi, is impressed with me, I can see it in the glossiness of his eyes as he watches me from his cube.
ANYWAY, there has been a lot going on with the music I listen to. Apparently when it rains, it pours, which is the truth of the situation with Korean music lately. 2NE1 released their newest album online yesterday, which was their first album in 2 or 3 years. Nell is releasing their final album for their "Gravity" series, which I've been following and am in love with. Nell started the series in 2012 and are finally finishing it on March 3rd! Epik High are supposed to have a comeback at some point... hopefully soon! They said it was going to be in the first half of 2014, but their company has pushed dates back many times in the past so I'm not getting my hopes up yet. JYP entertainment just debut a new boy group, with whom I'm not impressed but I'll keep my eye on them, and are set to debut their third girl group soon. This new girl group will follow in the footsteps of Wonder Girls and Miss A (and I love both of those groups), so I'm very interested to see how they will present themselves! Also, Girl's Generation just released their first mini album since last year, and even though I'm not really a fan of GG, I'm still interested in seeing how the competition will be with 2NE1 since they'll both be promoting at the same time.
Possibly my favorite song off of 2NE1's newest album is CL's solo song (below). I love that the title translates literally into "Mental Breakdown" and her lyrics are pretty witty which are brought about with a good flow. Being a female and loving rap, I have a respect for all female rappers, no matter what they're rapping about.
Also from 2NE1's newest album is their title song "Come Back Home". I like the mix of genres in this song, even though I'm not as impressed with the lyrics. The song starts as a reggae-ballad and then switches into a dubstep-hip-hop, then back to reggae. I'm not a big fan of Korean ballads (because I think they all sound the same) but because of those little dubstep moments, it sounds fresher than other songs of the same genre. This song along with "Crush" and CL's solo are my three favorites off their album. In saying that, the rest of the songs off of their album are just trite and boring, which is a real shame. I was really hoping to like this new album, but it's a bit of a miss for me. I don't want to, but I think it might be time for me to stop holding out hope for personally liking another full 2NE1 album.
I hate making these types of comparisons, but Nell is pretty much the Korean Death Cab for Cutie and vise-versa. They are an indie band who is really well known, with an interesting and unoffensive sound. I love both Nell and Death Cab For Cutie equally, so whenever either group puts out music, I always get really excited! Nell began their 3-part gravity series with "Holding onto Gravity" in 2012, in 2013 they released "Escaping Gravity", and finally in 2014 they will be releasing their full length album "Newton's Apple". Sadly, they always pick my least favorite song on each album as their title song. The title song also gets a music video, and it's not that these songs are bad, they're just not as good as the rest of the album. Anyway, I'm putting them all below in order of release, so give them a listen!
